Copper has been shown to be widely present in stormwater runoff, primarily as a result of brake pad wear. This runoff represents a significant source of copper to surface waters, where concentrations can potentially exceed toxicity levels for some aquatic organisms. Consequently, there have been efforts made to mitigate the amount of copper in stormwater runoff. Our group has worked on using media filtration to remove copper, with experiments done at the laboratory scale (top left photo) and at a field location in Salem, OR (bottom left photo).
