Samuel A. BriggsAssistant ProfessorSchool of Nuclear Science and Engineering Ph.D. Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics, 2016 University of Wisconsin-Madison M.S. Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics, 2013 University of Wisconsin-Madison B.S. Nuclear Engineering, 2011 Oregon State University Curriculum Vitae (updated Apr. 2022) |
Dr. Briggs has over a decade of experience in nuclear materials research focused on materials degradation in reactor environments. He has specific expertise relating to characterizing and understanding radiation damage effects in materials and environmentally-assisted cracking in advanced nuclear reactor coolant environments, such as liquid metals and molten salts. Most of his group's research is focused on enabling the construction and safe, long-term operation of next-generation nuclear reactors through a robust understanding of materials degradation phenomena and developing advanced materials with improved performance in these environments. Xavier QuintanaGraduate Research AssistantSchool of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering B.S. Physics, 2020 Florida State University |
Xavier is a second year Materials Science & Engineering graduate student pursuing a PhD and is studying the degradative effects of fluoride molten salt salt on structural materials. He is working on in-situ monitoring of environmentally assisted cracking in FLiNaK and stress corrosion cracking in molten salt. He also has experience using DFT to model and predict the electronic properties of novel semiconductors through a NSF REU program at Penn State and two years experience working with perovskites at Florida State.
