The Environmental Joint Campus Conference (JCC) is an annual event that help bring together Environmental Sciences graduate students and faculty from Oregon State University, Portland State University, and University of Oregon. The theme for this year's conference was "Environmental Sciences: An Interdisciplinary Approach Toward Global Innovation" was targeted toward Environmental Science graduate students with work that was highly interdisciplinary and innovating. Among the 65 poster presentations, 1 winner was selected for: Best Overall Presentation, Best Organization, and Best Content. Christine Nguyen, of the Navab Lab Group, received the award for Best Overall Presentation. Her presentation was an broad explanation of her research project for her Master's thesis: Photocatalytic Inactivation of Cryptosporidium by Ultraviolet Radiation within a Microfluidic Reactor. Her research project seeks to utilize small channels (1/40th of a liter) within a microfluidic reactor to effectively inactivate Cryptosporidium parvum, a parasitic protozoan. The microfluidic reactor equipped with UV radiation will inhibit replication mechanisms within the microbiological contaminant and provide clean water for sources affected by Cryptosporidium.
