With the growing need for fuel cell vehicles, various H2 storage approaches have been pursued in order to replace current extremely high pressure (700 bars) compressed H2 storage. Leveraging recent discovery of highly porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and their high volumetric storage capacity for hydrogen, a modular H2 cryo-adsorption system (called MATI) using densified MOF5 has been modeled, designed, built and tested in the lab. To meet the target H2 charge rate (thus dissipating the large amount of heat of adsorption), various conduction enhancement approaches have been explored in the recent phase, which is believed to have the potential to reach DOE 2020 H2 storage goals.
