Group Leader

James(Jim) Liburdy
Jim is currently the J.R. Welty Professor of Mechanical Enigneering at Oregon State University. He came to OSU from Clemson University where he was Director of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. His research has been very diverse ranging from natural convecting flows, jet impingement heat transfer, nuclear reactor flows, two-phase flows and convective boiling, turbulence characterization, cryogenic flow stability, and low Reynolds number aerodynamics. This also includes a diverse range of funding sources from federal agencies (NSF, AFOSR, ONR, DOE, DOD, DARPA and others) and industry (Xerox, DuPont, AT&T, HP, Intel, MaxFli, and a number of smaller companies). His work has resulted in 8 patents or disclosures, over 60 journal papers and 120 peer reviewed conference papers. But most importantly this work has led to the theses and dissertations of a number of highly qualified and successful students who were a pleasure to work with. Jim is also active in ASME having served as Chair of the Fluids Engineering Division, organized a number of conferences and served as Associate Editor of both the Journal of Fluids Engineering and Journal of Heat Transfer.

Current Students

Kiana Kamrani Fard
Ph.D. Student
Email: kamranik@oregonstate.edu
Kiana is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering and joined EFMRL in Fall 2018. She is currently working on unsteady aerodynamics of flapping foil energy harvesters, where she conducts Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), force measurements, and low order modelling to better understand the physics of the problem and improve the overall efficiency for a range of applications. Kiana received her MS and BS in Chemical Engineering (Process Design) from University of Tehran, where she was a member of Process Design and Simulation Research Centre working on modelling of particle granulation in high shear granulators using Discrete Element Method (DEM).

Penglei Ma
Ph.D. Student
Email: map@oregonstate.edu
Penglei is a mechanical engineering Ph. D student. He joined the Lab in Fall of 2018 as a visiting scholar. He is working on flow (wind or tidal) energy harvesting of an oscillating foil using experimental and numerical methods. Instead of a traditional turbine with rotary blades, the new generator harvests aerokinetic energy via an oscillating foil which consists of the heaving and pitching motions. Penglei got his bachelor degree in 2014 and now is pursuing a Ph.D degree at Shandong University.

Ivan Nepomnyashchikh
Ph.D. Student
Email: nepomnyi@oregonstate.edu
Ivan is a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student (expected 2022). He joined the EFMRL in Winter 2018 term. He is working on drift-flux model enhancement so that it could be able to simulate in real time transient influxes in multiphase flows. The work is inspired and was partially funded under the DOE NETL project aiming to develop an early kick detection method. In 2013, after 6 years of studies, Ivan graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University as an engineer in power hydraulics. He then worked for a 1.5 years on electrohydraulic servo actuators for Russian air and space industry.

Vickie Ngo
MS Student
Email: ngov@oregonstate.edu
Vickie joined the EFMRL in winter of 2019 as an MS student. She is currently working on unsteady flapping dynamics modelling that is funded under the NSF in support of renewable energy applications. Vickie completed her BS at Oregon State University in mechanical engineering with a minor in physics and a strong interest in thermal fluid sciences (2016). Prior to pursuing her MS degree, Vickie worked for 2.5 years at Hewlett-Packard Inc. as an R&D writing systems engineer for large format and future thermal inkjet technologies.

Michael Prier
MS Student
Email: prierm@oregonstate.edu
Michael grew up in Portland, OR and went to Seattle University for his B.S. in mechanical engineering before coming to OSU for his master's. He worked on the flapping airfoil energy harvester project where he did both experimental work and low order modeling. His master's thesis focused on how active control of the leading edge segment of the wing impacts the aerodynamic forces and the theoretical energy harvesting efficiency, and how accurately low order models are able to reproduce the experimental results in the chosen parameter range.

Firas Siala
Ph.D. Candidate
Email: sialaf@oregonstate.edu
Firas is a Mechanical engineering PhD student (expected 2018). He joined the EFMRL lab in Fall 2013. He is working on flow energy harvesting of flexible oscillating airfoil, where he will be using particle image velocimetry (PIV) to study transient flow physics to idensity mechanisms that are responsible for efficient energy generation. Firas was born in Tripoli, Libya and grew up in Vienna, Austria. He came to Corvallis in 2009 to pursue B.Sc in Mechanical Enginering. During his free time he enjoys playing soccer, snowboarding, and reading.

Reza Ziazi
Ph.D. Candidate
Email: ziazir@oregonstate.edu
Reza joined OSU in 2013 as a PhD student after receiving his M.S. from Oklahoma State University. He is currently studying turbulence characterization in porous media flows using 3-component Time-Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (TR_PIV). During his Master's, he worked on the optical modeling of near-infrared radiation phenomena in solid-liquid fluid flows to estimate penetration depth of light using solids concentration profiles derived from CFD. Reza received his B.S. from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in Iran in Aerospace Engineering where he developed a software in modeling the stability and performance of an unmanned helicopter. He is a member of APS, AGU, ASME, and AIAA.
